Under a new status of forces agreement, US troops in Korea can be arrested by the local police (albeit only for "serious crimes") and held in local jails pending trial, although they will be given all the rights they would have in a US court. Until the new policy took effect on 2 April, any US military personnel accused of a crime were held in US military jails until convicted in Korean courts and all appeals were exhausted.--Stephen V Cole
